Chapter
Fourteen
âSomething bothering you, Sarge?â Lister asked bringing her a hot drink. They had all come in early today and were waning now.
âItâs this puzzle with the diamonds Iâm not getting. How did Sam Love get away from those gorillas to do the switch?â
âMaybe somebody met him at the airport.â
âNo, I doubt he would trust anyone. Check the airport and see if he came back before the date he was due to fly back.â
âYou think he flew home, made the swap then flew back with the fakes and handed them over? Thatâs a bit risky isnât it? What if the flight was cancelled or delayed?â
âYou have a point, check private flights, see if any took a Sam Love or made any flights to Rome the day before he was due to fly in.â
âHope you donât mind me saying, Sarge, but you donât look great. You coming down with something?â
Josephine smiled back at him. She felt like crap but it wasnât a bug that was making her sick.
When Vincent arrived back at CID, she asked to see him in his office.
âWhatâs bothering you, Josephine? By the way, you look like youâve seen a ghost.â
âIâll be OK.â she sat down and told him what she was thinking and what sheâd asked Lister to do.
âItâs been bothering me too. Itâs a thought, but itâs risky.â
âThatâs what Lister said but I canât see how he did it otherwise.â
âChrist, heâs done a mind-fuck on everyone by the looks of things,â said Vincent.
Josephine winced but made no comment.
Vincent shuffled some papers on his desk. âDid you read the report from forensics? The white spirit they found was definitely the accelerant used to start the fire. Lisa said they found a partial burnt container with the branding not completely burnt away. Theyâre trying to match it and then we can check Mrs Loveâs stash in her shop. This is now a manslaughter case and we can bring in the big boys. Iâve asked Stella from the Tech Team to track Samâs movements from his phone locator.â
âI did read it yes,â she said. Stella Fisher was one of the best. âIt crossed my mind that the wife uses a lot of that in her job of restoration. I can see where your thoughts are going but why would they burn the warehouse?â
âPissed off that the police arenât doing enough to stop them, so took the matter into their own hands is the feeling Iâm guessing.â
âChrist, if so then theyâll be charged with manslaughter at the very least,â Josephine said and then a thought struck her. âWe donât know the identity of the body yet, could it be Sam Love? Maybe it wasnât the wives who started the fire but whoever did wants it to look that way to take the heat away from themselves.â
âYou mean whoever started the fire knows about the diamonds and wants retribution for what he did and is trying to frame them?â
She shrugged, she wasnât sure, it was messy, and the Russians were not messy when they targeted you.
